The National Transportation Safety Board investigation in the 2012 sinking of the venerable tall ship Bounty determined the probable cause was Capt. Robin Walbridge’s “reckless decision to sail the vessel into the well-forecasted path of Hurricane Sandy.”
Investigators found that the decision put the ship and its inexperienced crew into harm’s way in storm conditions. The “lack of safety oversight by the vessel organization” contributed to the sinking, according to the report.
